Many of us humans prefer to arrange for a cleaning professional to do all our household chores because let’s be honest, we have better things to do throughout the week. Besides, housekeeping experts can get our houses much cleaner than we can and in half the time, so it makes sense for them to complete those less than appealing jobs.

1. Remove the clutter

Hands up if you tend to wipe around the items on your surfaces. Don’t be shy, we’ve all done it at one time or another. The problem with this is that you’ll be left with ring marks. The same can be said for when you pick up objects to clean under them and then immediately place them back down on a wet surface.

Remove the temptation of doing both of these things by decluttering your rooms, especially any surface areas. We’re not saying that you should hide everything in a cupboard or donate all of your belongings to a charity. Just the things you don’t often or ever use. Cleaning work goes much more quickly when you don’t have to declutter your home along the way.

2. Organise your cleaning tools

When a professional cleaner arrives at your home, what are they usually armed with? Some type of cleaning caddy or tote tray, of course! They don’t keep dashing outside to their car each time they need to use a different cleaning product or tool. No way – because that would waste valuable time.

Rather than keep all of your cleaning supplies stashed on separate shelves in a cupboard, put them all together in a caddy, tray or even a bucket. Then, you can take all of your cleaning necessities with you from room to room to eliminate downtime. If your house is on the large side, create two or more cleaning tool organisers and keep one on each floor for added convenience.

3. Make a schedule

“I think I’ll just plan my weekly schedule two minutes before setting off for work on Monday morning” – said no professional cleaner ever. Trust us, they wouldn’t be in the industry for very long if they behaved this way. Besides, would you hire a cleaner who couldn’t tell you what day or time they plan to arrive at your home? No, we didn’t think so.

When you set up a regular weekly cleaning schedule, you’ll get used to what needs to be done and when, meaning you’ll be able to complete each household chore quicker with time. You could even set yourself a challenge to see if you can beat your time from the following week. Whatever the schedule, be sure to make it manageable – and stick to it!

4. Don’t forget your toothbrush

Believe it or not, you can get a whole lot of cleaning done with just a toothbrush. Obviously, don’t use the same one you use for cleaning your teeth – or anyone else’s for that matter. A toothbrush is an inexpensive and very hand tool to carry around in your cleaning caddy.

5. Deal with dust

Avoid using damp dusters as they’ll just make the dust disperse into the air (meaning the dust will settle back down on the object you just cleaned, leaving you to do it all over again). Ideally, use a dry microfibre cloth on surfaces and work back-to-front rather than back-and-forth. Your cloth only needs to touch the entire surface area once, so start from the back and work your way forwards until every inch has been wiped clean.

If you have knickknacks on your desk, nightstand or counters, such as lamps and ornaments, clean them first. Then, wipe your surfaces with the dry cloth to ensure you pick up every speck of dust. When it comes to wall mirrors and pictures, use a long-armed duster instead.

6. Tackle your toilet

Okay, so it’s probably one of the least desirable household cleaning jobs of them all – but it’s one that needs doing nonetheless. To save time and ensure your toilet is fit for a king, try cleaning it with some vinegar. It’s actually one of the best ingredients to use for getting your toilet super clean. Plus, vinegar is kind to the environment and great for killing bacteria. You can also pour some in the tank so that it ends up in the bowl each time you flush.

Don’t have any vinegar in the house? No problem. Use baking soda instead. Simply sprinkle some into the bowl, give it a good scrub with your toilet brush and flush away. For the outside of your toilet and tank, use an all-purpose spray and wipe down with a dry microfibre cloth. Easy-peasy!

7. Keep your blinds spotless

Window blinds are magnets for dust and can often be tricky to clean – but you can get the job done in no time when you use an old sock. You just slide an old sock over your hand (like you would your foot) and get to cleaning. For added quickness, wrap your hand around both sides of the blind and sweep it from one end to the other.

Once you’ve dusted the entire blind, pop your sock in your clothes basket and put it in the machine with your next load of washing.

8. Speed-vacuum

Before you start, remove any mess, rubbish and clutter off the floor (oh – and make sure you do the dusting first too). Start from the farthest corner of your room and use long firm strokes to vacuum your way right out the door. You only need to run the vacuum over each floor area once to make sure you catch any dust and dirt.

If you haven’t done so already, you should also consider investing in a cordless vacuum cleaner to make easy work of your cleaning. You won’t have to keep unplugging it and plugging it in again when you move from room to room and you’ll have no cord to hold you back while hoovering. They’re also lightweight and great for reaching all sorts of tricky areas.

9. Wash windows with alcohol

Don’t panic, we’re not talking about using a whole bottle of your favourite tipple here. The secret to quick streak-free windows is rubbing alcohol. Just add around half a cup to some soapy water and mix well. Then, spray the window with the solution and let it sit for a minute. This will help to dissolve any grease, dirt and other unwanted stains.

Once you’ve allowed the cleaner to do its job, polish the glass with a squeegee, paper towels or even some newspaper for streak-free windows that sparkle.

10. Ditch the toxic oven cleaners

There’s really no need to use toxic oven cleaning products when you can clean your cooker with some baking soda, water and white vinegar. Just combine a whole cup of baking soda with around half a cup of water and mix both ingredients together. You must then spread the solution onto the surface area inside your oven and leave it to do its magic overnight.

The next morning, sprinkle some white vinegar over the area you covered with the baking soda and water mixture. You’ll notice it soon starts to fizz and foam a little bit – which is perfectly normal and exactly what you want to happen. At this stage, wipe all the mess away with a warm, damp cloth, and voila – your oven will be beautifully clean. This method saves you so much time on scrubbing away all that horrid gunk and burnt-on grease.

11. Zero-effort bad odour eliminators

One of the quickest ways to give your home an instant boost of freshness is with an air freshener. Just be sure to use a natural, pet and people safe product, such as Earth Friendly Air Freshener Lavender. Natural air fresheners are much better at eliminating smells compared to the chemical based alternatives, which tend to just mask bad odours. These products can be used as often as you like and are particularly handy when a visitor shows up unannounced.

12. Work together as a team

If you don’t have enough time to get on top of the chores all by yourself, make cleaning your home a team effort. After all, you didn’t create all of the mess, so it’s only fair that everyone pulls their finger out. Get your whole household in on the cleaning action to not only cut down the amount of time it takes but to also encourage everyone not to make such a mess in the first place.

Divide the workload and make sure each person has a list of specific chores that they’re responsible for completing each week. If you have young children in the house, give them age-appropriate tasks like putting all of their toys away or loading the dishwasher.
