4 Top Tips to Keep Your Desk Clean


Our desk. That magical place we spend such a large amount of our time. Our home away from home. Where we all belong. Or something like that…

Whether we love sitting at our desks or not, there’s no denying that we spend a lot of time there. And that we should be as productive as possible during that time.

Believe it or not, a cluttered desk can have a negative effect on your productivity. Physical clutter in your surroundings competes for your attention, which can result in a decrease in your performance and an increase in your stress levels. No-one needs that.

So here are our top 4 tips to a clearer, cleaner desk, and hopefully a more productive you (if you can tear yourself away from those cat videos…).


1. Have a bin within arm’s reach

We all fall foul of the 3 o’clock munchies every now and again. Just make sure you have a bin close by so that disposing of the evidence can be done quickly and without judgement. This will keep your desk clear of rubbish and might even encourage you to throw away a few of those old post-its.

2. Photo references

Do you end up with lots of little piles of papers and notes that are only there for reference? Take a photo of the important reminders, and keep these photos on your computer or phone. Once your notes are digitised, bin the paper versions. You’ll be amazed at how much clearer your desk looks in a (camera) flash.

3. Get rid of unnecessary clutter

We know you loved the brightly coloured silly putty your secret Santa gave you. But it’s now just sitting on your desk collecting dust. So isn’t it time to bin it? Do the same for any other trinkets/broken pens/etc. cluttering up your desk. If it doesn’t have an important use, it doesn’t need to be there.

4. Clean before you leave

It’s always nice to come home to a clean house, and the same rule applies for starting your day off with a clean desk. Take five minutes at the end of each day to quickly wipe down your desk. Do a more thorough clean once a week, cleaning your keyboard, mouse, and screen. Just spending these five minutes a day cleaning will mean the dirt never piles up on your desk again. Clean space, clean mind.

So with these top tips, you’ll soon be on your way to a clean desk and a zen work space. Fewer distractions + a more pleasant environment = a more productive you. And will hopefully make spending all that time at your desk a bit more bearable.
