5 Simple Ways To Make Your Home Smell Amazing

The smell of your home is usually one of the first things people notice, so you want to make sure your house is smelling good! No matter how clean you keep your home, natural odors do develop – whether that’s pets, messy kids, or even a pile of smelly shoes. To ensure your home smells inviting and lovely all of the time, there are some really simple ways to freshen up your home’s overall aroma on a daily basis. Why it might seem easier to just mask unpleasant smells with a strong, scented candle or air freshener, by following these simple steps your home will smell lovely for longer, and candle masking will not be needed!

Clean your bin

It’s not just enough to take out your rubbish regularly, it’s important to occasionally clean your bins too! Even the most sturdy bin bags can be torn and any spillage leads to, you guessed it, bad smells! Here at Helpling, we recommend cleaning your bins with an antibacterial spray every single time you take your rubbish out to prevent any bad smells from lingering in your home. Then for a more thorough clean, which can be done less regularly, take the bin outside and apply an antibacterial cleaner to the inside and outside of the bin. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or bucket of water, then leave to dry before taking it back inside.

Refresh your carpets and rugs

Our carpets and rugs are great for making a room feel cosier, but they’re also great at absorbing smells as well! When it comes to cleaning carpets and rugs, baking soda is your best friend. Just sprinkle the baking soda all over the carpet, and let it sit for a few hours. Follow up by simply vacuuming up the baking soda.

Buy some flowers or pick some from your garden

Not only will flowers brighten up your home, but they’ll also have it smelling lovely too! If you’re an avid gardener, why not head into your garden and bring in some of your homegrown flowers. Equally, if you’re not green thumbed, treat yourself and pick some up flowers from your local florist or supermarket. Eucalyptus, jasmine, roses, and gardenias will get your home spelling particularly fresh and floral.

Dry clothes properly

Damp clothes are a big cause of bad smells in a home. Make sure after you’ve put a wash on either, dry your clothes in a tumble dryer or try and dry them outside on the washing line. Leaving wet clothes in a cold room to dry will just create that horrible damp smell, which you want to avoid at all costs!

Strategically place candles throughout your home

Now I know we said not to use candles to mask bad smells, but if you’re doing all of the above steps, candles are great for getting those lovely aromas wafting throughout your home. Just be strategic in where you place them! Place one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom – ensuring they’re in a safe position! Another great tip is to leave unlit candles in your laundry cupboard to get your beddings and clothes smelling extra fresh too!
