There’s often nothing better than a good glass of red wine, but it’s not such a great feeling when that red wine is spilt! Red wine stains happen to the best of us, so we understand the immediate panic felt as soon as a spillage happens. 

Contrary to popular belief, red wine stains aren’t actually as difficult to remove as you may think! The key is to act quickly and tackle the stain straightaway, as the longer it’s left the harder it is to remove.

How to remove red wine stains from carpet

  1. Start by blotting the stain, use a cloth rather than kitchen roll or paper napkins.
  2. Mix a tablespoon of washing up liquid, a tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of warm water together. 
  3. Dip a clean white cloth or sponge into the mixture and dab and blot at the stain until it vanishes. 
  4. Once the stain has vanished, spritz the area with cold water to rinse away any leftover mixture. 

How to remove red wine stains from upholstery

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible with a clean white cloth.
  2. Mix half a teaspoon of liquid washing detergent with 2 cups of cold water.
  3. Grab a clean sponge and blot the stain with the solution. 
  4. Then grab a clean cloth and blot until the liquid is all absorbed.
  5. Finally, sponge with cold water and blot dry with a clean cloth.

How to remove red wine stains from clothes

  1. Grab a clean cloth or sponge and blot the stain with cold water. 
  2. Then cover the stain with a stain remover, and leave it to sit for a few minutes.
  3. You can then either hand wash the item by placing the item into a sink of lukewarm water and fabric conditioner. Or just simply place the item into the washing machine on a cold wash.

Bonus Tip: Soda water

As mentioned, acting quickly is super important with red wine stains. However, if you’re in a setting where you can’t work on the stain straight away, simply pour some soda water onto the red wine stain! Not only is soda water a great mixer, it’s a pretty decent stain remover too – the bubbles help to push the stain out of the fabric. 

  1. Blot the stain as well as you can with a clean cloth. Be careful not to rub the stain in further.
  2. Pour soda water onto the stain.
  3. Blot again.
  4. Repeat until the stain has gone.
